Thursday 25th February - Bike *** Tunstall to Butley Ferry - hot and sunny

We got up really early – before 6 and headed straight out on our bikes in the direction of Butley. We were treated to a giant orange ball sunrise over the trees as we left the car park :) Further into the woods we saw two deer getting out of our way! We left our woods and crossed over a road to a track to take us down towards Chillesford. The tracks were very sandy and churned up due to all the harvesting activity. This is a huge farming area and there is farm machinery on the move everywhere. We eventually slithered our way to Chillesford church and had a quick look around it before joining the main road and taking a turning on the right which took us past Butley Mill and on to the Suffolk Coastal path through more sandy fields. The signs left us high and dry at times, not showing which way to go at junctions but we eventually found ourselves heading for our destination at Butley Ferry (only manned at weekends – which we knew before we set out, we didn’t intend to cross, just visit). Before meeting the river bank there is a huge mound called Burrow Hill, it is very strange as it stands on its own at the end of a field with no other hills anywhere around. The coastal path goes straight over the top so Mag had a go at making it to the top without getting off her bike and nearly got there. Then I had a go and……. My chain snapped!!! That wasn’t good as we were at least 7 miles away from the van!! Anyway we carried on to the ferry which looked very beautiful in the early morning light :) Mag decided to bike back to get the van via the roads and left me taking photos and taking a walk of just over a mile to the nearest road pushing my bike. She had a bit of a journey because as she wanted to go on the roads and avoid the sandy paths we came on, she had to peddle 9 miles to get back, reaching the van in 50 minutes. She packed up and drove to get me apparently on completely different roads but with the same mileage! :) She had seen two more deer and a green snake at the side of the road!! We drove on to Shingle Street where we ate our breakfast on the beach and took a walk to the lagoon which has formed in the shingle and which has become a popular destination for local kitesurfers recently. We drove home and I cleaned the bikes before taking mine into the local bike shop to be mended and Mag cleaned out the van etc.. Spent the afternoon in the garden, enjoying the sun because it is very hot again today.
